I totally had no idea what NoFollow or DoFollow meant, and I didn't really care. I didn't think it had anything to do with my blog.
Then I received an email from a company that we had previously used in a giveaway and they asked me to make all their links "no follow". Huh? Not really sure what they're talking about!!!
So, as I do, because it's easier than asking my web-savvy husband, I Googled the question and found a great explanation of what "no follow" means. Please please read it!
Here's a quote:
"There are occasions where you want to link to a website, but you don't want to transfer any Google juice to it. Advertising and affiliate links are a big example. These are links where you've either been paid outright to offer a link or you get paid by commission for any sales that someone else makes by following your link. If Google catches you passing PageRank from a paid link, they view it as spam, and you could end up being removed from Google's database."
And again, I'm not sure what Google juice is...(explanation coming soon!)
So after reading the article I copied the nofollow code and proceeded to the offending posts...and went into the html, and started adding the code. Then I made a somewhat lifechanging discovery (if that's possible)...Blogger already has the option to add "nofollow" built into their linking system, but we have to check the right box!
When you're editing a post, you can click on a word that you've previously linked and it will offer you the option to Change/Remove the link. (Just click "change")
Now look at the bottom of the options!
If you have reason to nofollow some links, then it's easier than you think to change it!

I've been hearing a lot about this lately but I'm still a bit confused about when to use it or when not. Is it just for paid/sponsored/giveaway links? I don't really have any of those kinds of links (just a few giveaways) so I was thinking it didn't apply to me. But then I wondered about other links... if I refer to another site in a blog post (e.g. another blogger's post that I just shared an idea from, or a website where I bought something for a project I'm talking about), do I click that box or not? Thanks for helping clear this up for me!

ReplyDeletePatty, I will see what I can find out. WP probably has some kind of built in widget you can use to prevent this already.
