In The News - Google Friend Connect Discontinuing in 2012 (for non-Blogger blogs)

A GOOGLE UH-OH PERHAPS?

"Google Friend Connect—Friend Connect allows webmasters to add social features to their sites by embedding a few snippets of code. We're retiring the service for all non-Blogger sites on March 1, 2012. We encourage affected sites to create a Google+ page and place a Google+ badge on their site so they can bring their community of followers to Google+ and use new features like Circles and Hangouts to keep in touch."

Just read this while on the Google blog. It seems rather upsetting considering many bloggers do not use Blogger as their platform and they use GFC to show their followers. What do you think?
Do you use Google+? What about using Facebook for followers? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. That is bad news. I just got Google Connect on my blog because it was the only 'follow' option I could find that told me who was actually following me.

I have links to my facebook fanpage, but it's not the same as Google Connect in my opinion because it doesn't separate those who are fans of the blog from those who are just general fans.

I have a Google+ account but rarely log in..as it's not as active as facebook and I'm not very happy with the layout. I also made a Google+ business page which goes completely unused. I guess I'll have to start using it now...

  2. I have Google+ but I don't use it, and I doubt I ever will unless my friends use is, and I doubt they ever will either.

  3. I blogged about this the other day too ... I'm not happy. I am a blogger blog, so it won't affect me ... yet. Word is it will eventually go away for blogger blog's as well. Bummer. I love GFC.

I created a google+ page for my blog but don't use it, don't even access google+ but every few weeks. I'm not a fan.

I'm hoping they change their mind and keep GFC. Maybe if we start a petition!! :)

  4. This is really sad news. they are trying to force Google+ down peoples throats. I don't use many gadgets but would like to keep my goodreads on there. I have a google+ but don't use it because it is not user friendly and no oNE I know in real life uses it or hardly any bloggers I know.

  5. So if I own my own domain but have it hosted on blogger does that make me a blogger blog?
Seriously, I think all the bloggers need to start a petition!

  6. I don't like Google+ layout either, too much of a hassle to use it. GFC is easy to use and it needs to be kept as it is. I'll sign a petition to keep it if one gets started.

  7. Grr! I am frustrated with Google... it feels like they are taking something away from us that's working great... I am not on blogger so i'll lose my GFC. I think Google Plus is a totally different deal. I am on it but don't use it. Like I said... GRR!

If they are making us do this, they should offer something that transfers all the GFC "followers" over to Google Friend Connect FOR us.

  9. I don't like Google either! I chose HelloCotton. No matter which blogging platform you use, you'll be able to connect, communicate, favorite and more all within the dashboard. It's easy to use and I believe more bloggers will be using it. That is when they're not on pinterest ;)
    Works for me....I'm merely suggesting.

  10. I'm really happy with the way things are at the moment. Google+ will just be another new thing to try out and learn and I'm really unhappy about the forthcoming changes, especially as it'll mean I'll lose a lot of existing followers :(

  11. Does this mean that all GFC followers on blogger blogs will disappear?!

Comments are how we stay connected as bloggers. Let us know how you feel and we'll return the favor...stay calm and blog on!!! And guess what? You'll never find Word Verification on our blog...it gets kind of annoying when you can't read what WV wants you to verify right?
