How To Backup Your Blog - New Blogger Updated Version

Remember to back up your blog - a how to tutorial

Backing up or saving your blog content is very important and something we like to remind you of quite often. We realized that maybe with the new Blogger interface you might be a little wary of what to do when you want to Back Up Your Blog!

Google/Blogger has a great page about backing up, so you should definitely read that info.

If you are working on the "look" of your blog you may also upload a copy of your current template...like this:

1. Click "Design" and view the interior of your blog. Look in the upper right hand corner and you'll see this -
2. Click Backup/Restore and this will prompt you to back up your blog's template (or design elements).
You will then see -
3. Click the orange Download Full Template button and save to your desktop. You may delete this after you have saved your work.

To backup and save your entire blog, here's what you do...

1. Click "Design" and view the interior of your blog. Click "Settings" - shown in orange with the little wrench icon at the bottom left corner.
2. You will then see "Blog Tools"...there are three items you can click here. You want the Export Blog (avoid Delete blog as it is right next to Export).

3. After you click on Export Blog you will get this box -
4. Click the orange Download Blog button. You will be prompted to save your file, follow the prompts. I prefer to save to my desktop and the file looks like this -
This is what the file will look like on your desktop (the L floated down to the next line)
5. You now have your blog saved! Keep this back up until you back up again or if you've made changes you want to save. If you have any questions about any of these steps please feel free to contact us! We will reply - it's a promise!

P.S. Here's a link to a post by EarnBlogger about backing up your Blogger blog on a PC.

  1. Thanks for the info. I'm still in my first year of blogging. I've never thought of backing it up!

    1. Amy, I guess I should have explained the reason behind backing up again...if anything "bad" was ever to happen to your blog, such as accidental deletion or getting hacked etc., something like that, then you'll have the content available to you and you can restore pretty quickly.
It's also possible to save your files in the "cloud" that is becoming super popular, so you will always have that file out in cyberspace, or save on an exterior drive that can't get wiped out easily. Good luck! Keep blogging!

  2. I went through the steps that you provided, but after pushing the download button I was not prompted to save. It took me to all of my archives? What went wrong? Thanks!!! :)

    1. Gosh, kc, I have no idea on this. Did you try it again? What exactly do you mean by archives?

    2. Do you use a Mac? I wonder if that could be a problem? It goes to, I think it is called, the RSS feed. But does not give me any options to save.

    3. Oops. This is KC still. I apparently am signed into my husband's blog account! :) Thanks!

    4. Hi kc! I do use a Mac and Firefox is my browser. When you're on the inside of your blog in the layout area you shouldn't be in the RSS or archives... I wonder what is happening? I will have my hubster try this at work on a PC and see what results he gets.
Or, if you'd like me to look at your blog I'd be happy to. Just email me directly at sarah@blogguidebook.com.

      Take care!

    5. I was having the same problem. I only have Safari on my Mac so I gave it a try with Firefox on my husband's computer and it worked. Hope this helps!

  3. okay...so i've tried a couple of times to do a back-up following the steps. backing up the template worked just fine, but when it comes to backing up the entire blog after i am asked to save, i get an error screen that says "unable to download archive from www.blogger.com unable to open this internet site, the requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. please try again later."

    what does that mean?

    1. Hi roganne, I'm not sure what it means...check and make sure you are logged in properly. Are you using PC or Mac? What is your browser? What is your URL?

  5. Thanks so much for this post! I had tried to back mine up in the past but it always just took me straight to the XML view of my blog. I was using Safari and finally had the idea to try it with my husband's Firefox, it worked and then I just emailed the file to myself. So for the people having trouble, you might want to recommend that they try a different browser. Thanks so much for you blog, it has helped me solve a lot of my problems over the past few months!

  7. Thanks for the advice. One problem: what if, when you click backup/restore, it gives you a list of page errors instead of backing up the Google blog?

Comments are how we stay connected as bloggers. Let us know how you feel and we'll return the favor...stay calm and blog on!!! And guess what? You'll never find Word Verification on our blog...it gets kind of annoying when you can't read what WV wants you to verify right?
