The New Blogger - Are You Handling It?

It's all coming up orange now isn't it? Sorry, you can't switch back*...
we'll miss you, old blue

Blogger finished its upgrades for everyone a few weeks ago (finally) and they've "forced" us to accept the new white and orange colors and "cool" look of the new dashboard. Change is never welcome when we become super comfortable and know where to go without really trying. One of the biggest issues, of course (and we've freaked out about this all year long - since Blogger announced all these changes last year) is how this will change our TUTORIALS. All of our toots are written with the old interface, so now we might have to spend a few months updating them! Yikes!

Here are a few potential issues you may come across, as mentioned by some users:

-Although I use the new dashboard most of the time, I do find myself switching back to the old dashboard for editing HTML. For some reason I get a lot of BX errors when making changes to a template's HTML in the new dashboard, so not having access to the old interface is a worry.

-Blogger's new Dashboard is irritating while writing posts as < br /> tags always get inserted.

-The single most ridiculous thing is you get it just right on the draft, press publish and it looks so unprofessional and has ignored your editing completely.

-I am a Mac user and am beginning to wonder if this is not compatible with the Mac. If so heaven help Blogger too.

-I used to be able to add a link in the LINK box underneath the TITLE field of a new post. CAN'T DO IT NOW!!!
- I can't get to some features in the Comments section... I was having to switch to the old dashboard & make the changes, then switch back. I just checked my dashboard & the option to switch to the old isn't there anymore!

WE OBVIOUSLY DON'T HAVE THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS, AND WE WONDER IF BLOGGER WILL ADDRESS THESE ISSUES. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE "SEND FEEDBACK" BUTTON IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF THE BLOGGER DASHBOARD TO LET THEM KNOW HOW YOUR EXPERIENCE IS GOING AND WHAT'S NOT WORKING.

We'd love to hear how our readers are handling the change and what your issues might be. Leave us a comment so we can keep a list of all the ch.ch.ch.changes....

*UPDATE (4/24/12) YOU ARE STILL ABLE TO REVERT TO THE OLD BLOGGER INTERFACE BY CLICKING THE "COG WHEEL" ICON. BLOGGER SAYS IT WILL BE GONE WITHIN THE MONTH (WHATEVER THAT MEANS).

  1. Be sure to always preview your posts! If you preview, and notice additional spacing between paragraphs you can highlight that area of the text and click the "Remove Formatting" button (the T with the line & the X underneath it) which will remove all those extra div's. This happens when you change something & then change it again & again without getting rid of the extra div's. Hope this helps someone!

    1. Awesome tip Katie! Yes, the Div's are annoying and can create way to many line spaces between paragraphs (in case you were wondering). DIV is an element that defines generic containers within the content of a page or it defines sections of a web page to make it easier to manage in general.

  2. I hate change so I'm being a grump about it but I'll get there. I have to see if the new blogger works better on the iPad because I had issues w/old Blogger trying to use my husband's iPad.

    1. THANKS FOR MENTIONING THIS, WE CHECKED IT OUT. NOT SURE HOW LONG IT WILL LAST. IT WAS A RELIEF TO GO BACK TO THE OLD WAYS FOR A FEW MINUTES.

  5. So far I haven't had to rip out my hair or anything. I find it takes longer to get to other blogs from my reading list and it's harder to get to the dashboard. I'll adjust and so will the many other Blogger users.

  6. I use the Blogger plus app on my IPad for most posting. They just added comment management . You can post pictures from your IPad using this app, which you can't do using Safari on the IPad. I read a lot using Blogshelf. There are other apps that do the same thing- this is not an advertisement!

  7. I kept it the old way since they still have that option available!

  8. I'm NOT looking forward to going back and changing all my tutorials! I actually think the new version is far less "intuitive" than the old, for instance, the "labels" are to the right of the post editor, instead of at the bottom. Sometimes I completely forget to add labels...
It's also much harder to change a GROUP of labels at once. Much messier and takes longer.
PLUS I think the fonts sizes on the actual interface are much too big and clumsy-looking.
I think that'll do for now, but basically I am asking - why spend all that time fixing what wasn't broke?? Functionality has NOT improved - they would have been better to spend the time working on a PROPER comment system like Wordpress's one which notifies commenters of replies... so we can have proper dialogue with our readers.
Sorry Blogger, I am NOT a fan :(

    1. Oh and just one more thing... the new word verifications are a PAIN! TWO words? And I notice that all the bogs which have the "new" comment form (with "reply") are forced to now have word verification. More pain!

    2. oops, i meant BLOGS not BOGS. Here I go word verifying AGAIN....

  9. I thought it was just me that absolutely hates the new Blogger. My posts look horrible too. All messy with the new Blogger.

  10. You can totally still use the old blogger! Go to settings and select 'use old interface' i'm gonna hold out as long as possible :)

  11. I think the new Blogger dashboard is actually a lot more user friendly. For me, it seems like there is a lot less clicking to get to where I want to go. I do keep forgetting to label my posts though. :) There are a couple of things that are driving me crazy. When I go to edit posts {I've got to remember those labels!} or pages, the formatting is completely messed up and I have to go back through the whole post or page and add/subtract line breaks. This is very frustrating since it seems like such a waste of time to redo something that I've already done.

I know that GFC will probably eventually be a thing of the past, but I noticed that I can't remove blogs from my reading list {or maybe I just haven't figured out how yet?} which is just a little bit of an inconvenience.

  12. What a miserable way to wake up, to find yet another "upgrade" forced upon us without any attempt to even explain the necessity. It is so ugly, clunky, and wasteful of space despite its dependence on symbols- there MUST be a way to revert back! Hell, I'm able to remove Timeline from Facebook.

Comments are how we stay connected as bloggers. Let us know how you feel and we'll return the favor...stay calm and blog on!!! And guess what? You'll never find Word Verification on our blog...it gets kind of annoying when you can't read what WV wants you to verify right?
